About The Role

The Cloud Practice is the team that builds large infrastructure for a wide-ranging and diverse set of customers. We help them choose the right tools and services, build highly scalable secure infrastructure and help them manage the maintenance of those environments. We come up with creative solutions to difficult problems and every engineer gets to have a large direct impact on each of those customers.

The team is made up of engineers from all around the country in distributed teams. You can work fully remote or at any Claranet UK office - most people choose a combination of the two. We’ve worked hard to create a remote-friendly culture and believe you can have a big impact no matter where you live.

As the Capability Manager of this Practice, your main role is to develop programmes of training, onboarding of new team members, growth, career progression and skills. You’ll be critical in helping the organisation to grow our people and ensure that we build a diverse talent pipeline. It is expected that you’ll be experienced in delivering large programmes, defining capability strategy and production of technical content. In this role, you will have opportunities to identify the most critical skills needed for Cloud practice community and design the content architecture to support it.

Essential duties & responsibilities

  • Developing a departmental Capability Strategy
  • Working closely with our Team Leaders and HR on development and career progression programmes to build their maturity, develop inclusive career pathways and further embed professional standards
  • Design and manage the onboarding program and structure for new joiners. Ensure all the documents and processes are accurate and aligned with the strategy of the department
  • Identify new training and development needs in line with operational needs and strategic goals and objectives.
  • Develop and implement a performance framework, enabling the teams to evidence both efficiency and quality of work
  • Overseeing the delivery of Claranet's participation in Talent Schemes e.g. Internships and Graduate programmes
  • Supporting the team in designing our future apprenticeship strategy
  • Review existing training materials produced to determine appropriateness and relevance, modify or create new course materials to meet specific training needs
  • Monitor and evaluate training programmes effectiveness, agree success factors and KPI’s, report on them
  • Manage training budget
  • Maintain understanding of new educational and training techniques and methods
  • Research most appropriate and cost-effective external partners and technologies to support delivery of training plan, using a variety of methods
  • Manage the mentor and buddy system within the team to support capability and knowledge transfer

About You


  • Attention to detail
  • Proven track record of delivering education to internal stakeholders, using a variety of methods
  • Experienced in design and managing the delivery of content
  • Professional accreditation in or advanced knowledge of Project Management Methodology e.g. Prince 2 or MSP
  • Agility to manage competing demands in a programme environment
  • Hands-on experience of Public Cloud environments and associated technologies.
  • Ability to continuously adapt and learn new Cloud skills.
  • Ability to work well with and communicate effectively with cross-functional teams
  • Ability to understand and communicate concepts quickly and accurately
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

In addition, the following are highly desirable:

  • Certification in Cloud technologies
  • Experience with multiple Cloud providers.
